This project aimed to design a vinyl for a compilation of Deftone's b sides and rarities. It was important to keep the overall Deftones’ vibe (close-up shots, one main focal point, sometimes monochromatic, etc) but put it into a new format. Since it would be a compilation, it felt obvious to use their iconic yawning cat. The visual process consisted of lots of scanned-in elements to get a sense of the overall composition, wanting that close-up shot seen in several of their albums. In the end, scans of random ink scraps were used to create an implied grid. This modular grid was followed to add the rest of the collage squares and other elements, and shifted the title of the album off-center to break the grid for emphasis. The final cover and back were then printed in three vellum layers, then scanned in all together.
